NBL In Talks With Victoria, NSW And South Australia Over 2021 Hub

T
he NBL is currently in discussions with the governments of Victoria, NSW, and South Australia over the establishment of a COVID-safe hub for the 2021 NBL season.

With the season currently scheduled for a January 15 start after recently being pushed back from December due to COVID-19, the league is planning on releasing a draft season schedule this month.

As part of the plans to start the season, the NBL is hopeful they won’t need to set up a hub to play out the season, but reports suggest Victoria is the favourite to host the season if the hub is required.

NBL commissioner, Jeremy Loeliger, confirmed the NBL has been in talks with State Governments over a potential hub, but he is hopeful Australia’s state borders will be open by January 15, meaning the hub won’t be needed.

“We need an emergency plan that includes a hub in some way if necessary,” Loeliger said.

“I think it would be complacent assuming we didn’t need a hub, and we’d look pretty silly if we needed one during the season and didn’t sort something in advance.

“We’re starting to build trust that there is real light at the end of the tunnel.

“As the valley was raised, we are still a long way from being completely out of the first and we are very much aware that we have experienced the virus firsthand here in Victoria.

“The start of the season is still three months away and hopefully the best part of a six-month season, but we can’t be complacent and have to plan very carefully,” he said.

Hawks owner, Dorry Kordahi, told alKhaleej Today the situation could change any day due to the uncertainty of COVID-19.

“It was difficult for us to restart the club, but I’m talking to the league and I’m hoping for some answers,” Kordahi said.

“If we start the season on January 15th, we have to plan at least six weeks in advance.

“If we have a schedule to work with, we can give our fans a chance to see how the season is going.

“With the pandemic, things can change week by week, but right now, we are getting some positive news.

Best road bike 2021: serious but affordable carbon and steel bicycles

Road cycling can be pretty daunting if your usual jaunt is a pedal along a flat cycle path to the local pub. The terrain can make the ride uncomfortable, and quite frankly the old road bike in the back of your shed isn't going to cut it in today's world of wind tunnel-tested carbon fibre rockets and lightweight aluminium frames.

Having a decent road bike will help make the ride easier and more comfortable, and as we mentioned, now is a great time to pick up a pretty good road bike for £2,000 or less.

The frame material is the main reason for this, but be warned: we have found that as frame technology has improved over the years (particularly those of the carbon fibre variety), the finishing kit that completes the bike (gears, wheels, brakes, saddles etc.) has suffered.

You need to look at the whole package.  If you opt for a more expensive carbon, be sure to check out the wheels, groupset (gears and brakes) and finishing kit (saddle, bar tape and cabling), as often manufacturers will balance the books by scrimping on these fittings.

For example, an entry-level groupset such as Shimano's Tiagra or Comapagnolo's Veloce may not endure the punishment of a long sportive or timed weekend ride as well as other brands, but for those simply looking to rack up the miles on gentler rides or take it easy during a friendly competition, this may not be such an issue.

The same can be said for wheelsets. Ideally, the lighter and stiffer the wheel, the better for speed and handling. But don't forget this will typically mean a compromise in comfort and budget.

Similarly, the geometry of a frame and its construction will greatly affect the way it performs and handles. A racy geometry (the angles of the tubes that make up the frame) can be a pain on longer rides, despite performance gains. A fact that's well worth considering if you're simply looking to add a little swag to your daily commute.

Olympics: Australia bickers about athlete funding as Tokyo looms

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - If bickering over funding was an Olympic sport, Australia would be in line for a gold that might help slow the nation's seemingly inexorable slide down the medals table.

Just five months before the Tokyo Games begin, a war of words has broken out between the Australian Sports Council (ASC), the government agency in charge of disbursing funding, and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), which pays for athletes to compete at the Games.

While the organisations might be expected to be working hand-in-glove to put athletes on podiums they are instead squabbling in public over the use of hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding for high-performance sport, which the ASC has said is up for review after the Olympics.

"The sports don't want to know if their funding is good for the next six months," AOC President John Coates told reporters in Sydney this week.

"They want to know for the next four years, so they can go ahead and employ coaches."

At the turn of the century, Australia prided itself in punching above its weight at the Olympics but medal counts have plummeted since 2004.

After finishing fourth at Athens with 17 golds among its 50 medals, Australia dropped to
