Best electric cars arriving in 2021

They’re coming. Slowly but surely, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs, or EVs) are making their way to Australia, despite the lack of federal, state and local government incentives that help boost the demand for zero-tailpipe-emissions vehicles.

The fact is, EV infrastructure is growing from coast to coast, and carmakers remain confident that legislators will eventually join other nations in incentivising EV uptake in some form or another. After all, we are on the cusp of huge wave of fresh EVs, especially from Europe, Korea and China.

We’ll only see a trickle initially, but some are already earmarked for an Australian launch in 2021.

2021 Volkswagen Caddy and California due in Australia next year

The 2021 Volkswagen Caddy van line-up is due in Australian showrooms about the middle of next year, followed closely by the next-generation Caddy California camper.

However the new Caddy range will initially be offered with a choice of only diesel engines, versus the choice of petrol or diesel power currently.

Several body styles will be available, including short and long wheelbase vans, a crew van, a people mover, and the California camper.

Top 10 electric cars coming to Australia between 2018-2020

The future that we didn’t expect ten years ago is now. The proliferation of electric cars such as the Tesla Model S has sent shock waves through the auto industry, and there is barely a carmaker out there that doesn’t have plans to produce an electric car in the near future. The large investment required to get this technology into showrooms is no longer daunting since many pundits think electricity will eventually replace fossil fuels at some point. Many capital cities are even in the process of outlawing emissions-producing cars, mandating EVs.

Driving an electric car is not what you might think; it is an exhilarating rush afforded by the instant torque and eery silence. First time EV travellers will be blown away by this experience. Here are ten electric cars expected to arrive in Australia in the next few years.

New Cars: 2020 New Car Calendar

Australia's new car market, it is fair to say, did not have a stellar year in 2019. Month after month, sales were down, with consumer confidence low and dealers struggling with significant changes to finance regulations.

For those looking to buy, however, 2019 was a strong year of exciting launches across the 60-or-so brands operating in Australia, from the powerful Alfa Romeo Stelvio Q and new-generation Kia Cerato in January to the Mercedes-AMG A35 pocket rocket and BMW 3 Series wagon towards the end of the year.

Much of the 2020 calendar remains vague at this stage, with our crystal ball still to reveal what's to come through the middle and end of the year. But, for now, we're expecting the below models to show up either as described, or simply 'at some point'.

We will, of course, update this calendar through the year as the picture becomes clear
