Best portable Wi-Fi hotspots 2021: mobile Wi-Fi for international travel

Getting online abroad used to best be avoided. Expensive roaming charges made it uneconomical, and though roaming is presently possible for UK mobile users in the EU, that might soon change.

Besides, using a laptop usually means finding potentially dodgy Wi-Fi networks, and buying local SIM cards when travelling long-haul is a faff. Cue the mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and global SIM card, which bring convenience and security like never before.

Literally anywhere there’s a 2G, 3G, 4G or 5G mobile phone network is ripe for getting online thanks to these devices, which attach to a local mobile phone network and create a WiFi network that several devices can then connect to.

Check out our guide below on how to choose the best Wi-Fi hotspots for international travel this year.

Brief Australia: Lockdown To Accelerate WiFi 6: A Threat to Anticipated 5G Deployment? and more

In ‘ Will 2020 See Successful Deployment of 5G? ’, we looked at the 5G development process, stating that we expect successful deployment to be delayed until the end of this year in a best-case scenario.

While most of the hype and attention has been on 5G, we feel that Wi-Fi 6 appears to be much closer to being realised and that device manufacturers have been taking Wi-Fi 6 more seriously.

This insight takes a look at the Wi-Fi 6 technology, its development process, and its differences compared to 5G.

Key points we highlight are:

  • Wi-fi 6, previously denoted as 802.11ax, is a better version of the Wi-Fi network (replacing Wi-Fi 5 standards) in terms of data rates, multiple user connectivity, and battery performance of devices connected to the network.
  • The Wi-Fi 6 technology appears to be a need during this pandemic, where people are locked down at home and internet usage is on the rise.
  • Mobile and hardware devices that are Wi-Fi 6 enabled have been launched since 2019.
  • Comparing Wi-Fi 6 with 5G, we note that:
    • 5G and Wi-Fi 6, both aim at delivering better performance.
    • 5G is more suitable for outdoor use, while Wi-Fi 6 is more for indoor use.
    • Wi-Fi 6 adoption might be faster than 5G.
    • The U.S. seems to be leading the world with Wi-Fi 6, explaining the country’s relatively slow progress on 5G.
  • Wi-Fi 6 is likely to be successfully deployed across the world by 2022 and will be successful only if the network reaches a 6ghz bandwidth.
  • We feel that, Wi-Fi 6 seems more necessary (than 5G) for IoT trends such as smart homes to develop and advance.

Australia begins pre-clinical testing for coronavirus vaccine Read more at https://www.todayonline.com/world/australia-begins-pre-clinical-testing-coronavirus-vaccine

SYDNEY - Australia's national science agency said on Thursday it has commenced the first stage of testing potential vaccines for COVID-19, as it joins a global race to halt the coronavirus pandemic.

Pre-clinical testing by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), comprising injecting ferrets with two potential vaccines, was underway at its high-containment biosecurity facility near Melbourne.

The first phase testing would take around three months, CSIRO's director of health Rob Grenfell told Reuters, adding that any resulting vaccine would not be available to the public before late next year.

"We’re still sticking to the optimistic 18 months for delivery of vaccine to the general consumers," Grenfell said from Melbourne in an interview over Skype. "Now this, of course, may change. There’s a lot of technical challenges that we’re having to go through."

LOW FODMAP LAMB KORMA

Today I will share with you my family’s favourite Indian curry recipe: Low Fodmap Lamb Korma. This mouth-watering curry has been adapted for the more sensitive tummies, yet it is still so creamy and delicious!

As you may know, my husband is of Indian origin, so we do eat quite a bit of Indian food at our house. We all like it, so I try and make it as often as possible. However, since starting the Low Fodmap diet, things have been a little harder. There are many ingredients that need to be avoided or substituted and while adapting an Italian recipe is reasonably easy for me, when it comes to Indian food I find it a bit more intimidating.
